State Street’s Marshall Field department store didn’t just revolutionize retailing in Chicago, it influenced the entire world. Marshall Field transformed shopping from a chore into a luxurious pastime, and that is embodied in its palace-like architecture and gorgeous Tiffany Studios designs. Guided by the “give the lady what she wants” mantra, Marshall Field catered to women customers at a time when women had very little autonomy outside of the home.
