Ugly Buildings Tour

🤣🤣🤣

“The local architecture tour that needed to happen.” -The Chicago Tribune

”He is a tour guide’s tour guide and this tour is irreverent and hilarious.” -WTTW’s Geoffrey Baer

Tour Description

Chicago is the architectural capital of the country and has so many tours profiling these wonderful, beautiful buildings. Hiding around these architectural masterpieces, however, are UGLY BUILDINGS.

Some of these structures have been ugly since inception. Others become ugly due to falling into disrepair, questionable renovations, or cringe-worthy expansions. Some are decent buildings that just have a few really ugly features.

Regardless of how and why a building strains the eyes, they are showcased on this Ugly Buildings Tour! This “educational roast” teases these buildings and creates a conversation on what makes a building pretty or ugly. These opinions are all subjective, so anticipate a lively discussion.

Important note: There are jokes about Trump Tower along with the person it is named after on this tour. There is also one swear word used, because it is an important part of a story. If you don’t think you would find these kinds of jokes funny, I recommend choosing any other architectural tour, like Architecture’s Greatest Hits.

There are so many stories and perspectives on Ugly Buildings I have not previously been able to share on any other tours. I am really excited to have you along for this experience that is unlike any other tour in Chicago!

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is the tour guide?

Mike McMains creates and delivers all Tours With Mike experiences, so you know you are getting a professional, passionate guide.

Is this tour really mean?

None of the teasing on this tour is directed towards the people who designed the buildings. Many of these architects have created some of my favorite buildings around the world. I just lovingly roast the ugliness of what we can see in front of us along the tour route.

The lone person who gets jokes on the Ugly Buildings Tour is Trump Tower’s namesake, because he is inseparable from that skyscraper’s branding. If you don’t think you will find that kind of humor funny, I recommend going on any other tour.

How do I find Mike?

He will be at the aforementioned starting point wearing a Tours With Mike polo, hat, or some other type of branded attire or accessory.

Do we go inside buildings?

No, Ugly Buildings only focuses on the unattractive design on the outsides of structures.

Are dogs allowed on the tour?

Since the entire tour is outdoors, leashed dogs are allowed.

Is there a restroom stop on the tour route?

Tourees are encouraged to stop at the restroom before the tour begins. The tour starts right across the street from Blue Bottle Coffee (313 W Wolf Point Plaza), and there is a restroom in there. A restroom stop can be made available during the tour upon request.

Can I buy my ticket in-person immediately before the start of the tour?

Tickets need to be purchased through this website in advance, because capacity is limited.

What is the cancellation/refund policy?

Tickets are fully refundable with at least 48 hours notice. Refund instructions are provided in the confirmation email.

What if it is raining?

All tours go out rain or shine, so please dress appropriately for the weather.

Are there any COVID-19 considerations in-place?

All tours follow guidelines laid out by the State of Illinois’s and City of Chicago’s health departments. Currently masks and proof of vaccination are not required. Your tour guide, Mike, has been fully vaccinated and boosted. The tour also takes place entirely outdoors.

Can I book this as a private tour?
