Virtual Tours

Virtual Tours are Great!

Virtual tours are a wonderful way to authentically explore the world in an economical way! There are three ways to check out my virtual experiences:

  1. Watch my public, live-streamed experiences as they are happening on Facebook Live. The virtual tour calendar below has the registration links and then watch the live-stream at the start time from any device. It’s an interactive experience where I can respond to your questions and comments live. There is no charge for the live-streamed tours, but tips are appreciated and you can see the variety of ways to send them here.

  2. I will soon be uploading recordings of my live-streamed virtual tours on a to-be-finalized platform. Monthly subscribers can watch these recorded tours anytime.

  3. I can do private virtual tours for your group that can be live-streamed, recorded, or a combination of both. This is a fantastic way to engage the modern workplace that is increasingly spread out geographically. More details are on the Private Tours page.

I am a big fan of these kinds of tour experiences and hope to see you soon on them!

Chicago is the architectural capital of the United States. It was the birthplace of the skyscraper, led so many architectural movements, and is home to so many masterpieces. "Chicago Architecture 101" is a six-part series of 45-minute tours chronologically profiling the major architectural styles found downtown, describing their influences and characteristics, and showcasing wonderful examples. With all the tours in this series taking place after sunset, you'll get fantastic night-time views of the architecture and surrounding skyline.

"Contemporary Style" is the sixth part of the six-part "Chicago Architecture 101" series. The 21st century has produced a lot of new developments across Chicago, and the highest-profile projects look very different from anything in the city’s history. There are, however, several trends in common between them echoing global architectural themes. Learn all about the newest icons from Renzo Piano, Frank Gehry, and Jeanne Gang.

With all the tours in this series taking place after sunset, you'll get fantastic night-time views of the architecture and surrounding skyline.

"Brutalism & Postmodernism" is the fifth part of the six-part "Chicago Architecture 101" series. Mid-Century Modernism dominated high-rise construction in Chicago from the 1950s through the 1980s. These designs championed a “less is more” philosophy, but dissenters said, “less is a bore.” Two styles emerged reacting to Modernism in very different ways: Brutalism and Postmodernism.

With all the tours in this series taking place after sunset, you'll get fantastic night-time views of the architecture and surrounding skyline.

"Mid-Century Modernism" is the fourth part of the six-part "Chicago Architecture 101" series. Between the Great Depression, World War II, and reconstruction, more than 20 years passed without a new skyscraper in Chicago. By the mid-1950s, the city was ready to add new towers, but a new style was needed to represent a more somber country as it looked to the future. Minimalist towers that were both simple and revolutionary emerged as Chicago became the Mid-Century Modern capital of the United States.

"Art Deco" is the third part of the six-part "Chicago Architecture 101" series. The Roaring 20s had a booming economy, and through more widespread usage of the automobile, an ability to travel that had never before existed. A new style of architecture was needed to celebrate this prosperous era, and that happened with exuberant Art Deco.

"Classical Revival" is the second part of the six-part "Chicago Architecture 101" series. In 1893, Chicago hosted a big event: the World’s Columbian Exposition. The Court of Honor at this World’s Fair was designed in a classical revival style inspired by ancient Greece and Rome. The Fair was an epic success with more than 27 million visitors and had ripple effects across the country afterward, including renewed interest in classical architecture.

With all the tours in this series taking place after sunset, you'll get fantastic night-time views of the architecture and surrounding skyline.

"Commercial Style" is the first part of the six-part "Chicago Architecture 101" series. When skyscrapers began appearing in Chicago in the 1880s, the tallest buildings ever seen in the history of world civilization emerged. This was a tremendous opportunity for architects, but it also posed a challenge: how do you organize the exterior facade for tall buildings? Along came a new style of design… the Chicago Commercial Style.

Hector Guimard: Art Nouveau to Modernism at the Driehaus Museum
Oct

Hector Guimard: Art Nouveau to Modernism at the Driehaus Museum

Hector Guimard is best-known for his designs for the Paris Métro, which are so emblematic of the French Art Nouveau style that it was sometimes referred to as “le style Métro.” Representing a radical break from the classical and revival styles of the nineteenth century, Art Nouveau embraced natural forms while integrating architecture with the decorative and fine arts. “Hector Guimard: Art Nouveau to Modernism” explores Guimard’s commitment to sharing beautiful, sensuous, accessible designs for both civic architecture and everyday objects with a wide audience, as well as Guimard’s modern entrepreneurial approach to promoting his work through Le Style Guimard branding and his use of mass-production technologies. The show also explores the critical role played by his wife and collaborator Adeline Oppenheim Guimard, presenting new scholarship that underscores her critical role as her husband’s creative partner during his lifetime and ardent steward of his legacy.

To provide access to “Hector Guimard: Art Nouveau to Modernism” while the Driehaus Museum’s elevator is out of commission during the Murphy Auditorium renovations, we’re offering live-streamed, virtual tours of the exhibition on October 3 and 24. The event is free, but registration is still required at least 24 hours in advance so you can receive the Zoom link. Attendees are encouraged to ask questions during this interactive experience.

This virtual tour is a partnership with Tours With Mike who makes architecture, design, and history fun and interesting through his in-person and virtual experiences. Mike was a volunteer docent with the Chicago Architecture Center for 15 years, and he also has a degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in real estate, urban planning, and finance.

Currently "Chicago Black Dance Legacy" and "Gensler: Building Light" are the Art on theMart featured installations.
